The group, made up of learners aged 17 to their early 20s, came from a variety of educational backgrounds but all shared the same ambition, to complete their CSCS training and begin a career in construction.
Hosted by Site Manage Simon Hinton, the learners were taken on a guided tour of the development, where they explored different stages of the build and saw first-hand how a construction project progresses from structural shell through to the finished home. Throughout the visit, the site team explained the importance of health and safety, quality workmanship and teamwork on a busy construction site. Learners were shown how different construction methods are applied, including blockwork, structural steelwork, floor construction and the positioning of window and door openings.
As they moved through the building, the group discussed how drawings become reality, with supervisors highlighting the purpose of different rooms, structural features and the sequence of works that follows once the main structure is complete. The learners also had the opportunity to step onto the upper floors, where they viewed the development from scaffolded areas and discussed safe working at height, site logistics and how multiple trades work together to deliver a project safely and efficiently.
Outside, the tour continued with close-up demonstrations of masonry work, cavity construction and building details, giving learners the chance to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the practical skills they are preparing to develop within the industry. The visit formed part of Abbey Access Training’s commitment to providing learners with meaningful industry experience alongside their classroom-based learning.
Following the visit, every learner successfully passed their CSCS test and is now looking to build on their knowledge and begin developing their practical skills and experience within the construction industry.
Simon Hinton, Site Manager said:
Visits like these are an excellent way of bringing construction to life for people considering a career in the industry. It gives learners the opportunity to see how a live site operates, ask questions and understand the high standards of safety, quality and teamwork that are expected every day. We were delighted to welcome Abbey Access Training to Carholme Road and wish all of the learners every success as they begin their careers.
With the demand for skilled construction professionals continuing to grow, partnerships between training providers and employers play an important role in preparing the next generation of workers, giving them the confidence, knowledge and practical insight needed to enter the industry.
