Description
Turning Vision into Reality
The Lidl Rotherham project was driven by the need to provide a modern, accessible, and efficient retail space for the local community. This development followed Lidl’s bespoke design standards, delivering a contemporary store layout with high-quality construction and customer-focused amenities.
Despite the complexities of the site, Gelder successfully delivered the project on time, maintaining Lidl’s standards for quality, safety, and operational readiness.
Points to Consider
Constructing a new supermarket on a previously compromised site presented unique challenges. Our team overcame three primary issues:
- Contaminated Site:
Initial site setup revealed the area had been used by illegal waste dumpers, including the discovery of licensed asbestos. This led to an immediate halt to construction activities. We engaged a specialist asbestos removal contractor, coordinated with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), and implemented strict safety procedures to protect both workers and the public. - Programme Pressure:
The asbestos discovery caused a six-week potential delay. Through proactive planning and collaboration with our contractors, we reduced the delay to four weeks, ensuring the store opened on schedule. - Bespoke Construction Requirements:
The store was constructed to Lidl’s unique design, including Poroton walls with a render system and a 4000m² car park. Close collaboration with neighbouring property owners was required to construct a brick façade as part of a party wall arrangement.Solutions & Technical Specifications
- Construction of a 4000m² car park with white lining and EV charging provision
- Installation of boundary walls and new fencing
- Soft and hard landscaping for customer and pedestrian areas
- Car park lighting and surface water drainage systems
- Steel frame construction and Poroton wall installation with render system
These measures ensured operational readiness, aesthetic appeal, and long-term durability of the store.
