Description

Scope of works

We were appointed as principal Contractor under CDM Regulations for the refurbishment and decoration works to form offices at Grantham District Hospital by the United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The project involved comprehensive renewal of internal finishes, including installation of new vinyl flooring, fire-rated doors, suspended ceilings, lighting, data and power services, window blinds, and the construction of a new external DDA-compliant access ramp.

Delivered within a live hospital environment, the work required a carefully phased approach to maintain essential clinical operations and patient safety throughout.

Points to Consider

Delivering construction works within an active NHS facility required a disciplined and sensitive approach to minimise disruption to staff, patients, and visitors. Our team managed three key challenges:

Live Environment All work was delivered within a functioning hospital, demanding stringent segregation of work areas, infection control compliance, and daily coordination with Trust estates and clinical staff.

Programme Coordination: With multiple departments operating close proximity, our team developed a detailed and flexible programme to align noisy works, electrical shutdowns, and flooring installations with hospital schedules.

Access and Safety: Construction zones were fully barriered off to maintain safe pedestrian routes, while out-of-hours and weekend working was implemented to accommodate essential shutdowns and minimise disruption.

Solutions & Technical Delivery

Our project team adopted a proactive and collaborative approach to deliver a modern, efficient, and compliant office environment. Key aspects included:

  • Programme Management: A coordinated delivery plan was developed with Trust stakeholders to sequence works efficiently and ensure uninterrupted hospital operations.
  • Safety & Compliance: Two project H & S Audits by Gelder Group H&S Manager and the Clients H&S Co Ordinator Ridge & Partners LLP All areas audited with no issues reported.
  • High-Quality Finishes: Durable safety vinyl flooring, LED lighting, and bespoke window blinds were installed to create a comfortable and professional workspace.
  • Accessibility Improvements: The construction of a new DDA-compliant external ramp improved inclusivity and access for all users.

Through disciplined planning and collaboration, the project was successfully delivered on time and within budget.
