Description

The project was the refurbishment of the old ambulance control centre to form a new cancer support centre.

Working within live environments always throws up challenges. Specific to this project was the challenge of only having an access route through the main entrance of outpatients, meaning this access route was always busy. Furthermore, a clear pathway needed to be maintained through the centre of the work area to allow the café staff access into the kitchens. This created health and safety challenges that needed to be managed by the Gelder Project team, to ensure the safety of all involved parties while also ensuring the project is completed on time, within the client’s budget and to the client’s requirements.

Another challenge that occurred within this project, was the late issue of construction drawings and changes to design, particularly M&E. Despite this we ensured that the programme was not affected. We always ensure specialist sub-contractors are selected who we have previous working experience with, this
ensures we have great relationships with our sub-contractors and we therefore experience little issues when challenges and changes occur, such as design changes.

With all the challenges faced this was a very successful project for both Gelder and the ULHT, the client was very happy with the end product
and we have had lots of positive feedback.
