Description
Work at Lincoln Hospital was in itself a challenge working around a live Hospital environment. This was further complicated by the impact faced by the Coronavirus. The first Challenge we faced was how to carry out this works without having too large an impact on the day-to-day activities at the hospital. This was overcome by creating alternative access straight into our work zone by removing a window and the brickwork below.
We then installed a Haki Staircase within our compound. During the works it was agreed with the trust that we would create ‘restricted access’ for key hospital staff. During the Demolition phase this was controlled strictly through daily briefings between the Site Manager – Anthony Paton and the Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager – Andy Cawthra. As the job progressed we created a ‘safe corridor’ to allow the staff greater freedom moving alongside our work zone.
We reacted to the new challenge of Coronavirus quickly and installed a range of measures that included:-
- A set of Covid RAMS were produced by our external Health & Safety advisors Stallard Kane that was discussed with all contractors prior to starting work.
- Portable hand sanitizer stations on every access & egress point.
- Staggered lunch breaks.
- Regular updates, (Tool Box talks) as the threat changed.
During this project we experienced a number of design changes as adjustments were made to fit the end users requirements. Despite this we incorporated these changes and managed to remain on programme.
The installation of Fire Doors in Hospitals is something we have a considerable amount of experience with and due to Gelder committing the correct Management Team with this experience to this project it enabled this works to get completed without delays.
Mark Bigger—Estates Capital Project Manager
Gelder recently completed the Clinic 7 refurbishment project at Lincoln County Hospital. The project was very well managed through every level of their management team, bringing in the scheme on time and under budget. It was a suitably complicated project, but with effective communications any problems were effectively and quickly sorted out. It stands alongside other similarly successful recent projects at the hospital.
Vicky Medlock—Clinical Services Manager Haematology, Oncology & Palliative Care
The staff were always polite and helpful and explained what was happening and updating on the progress was being made.
