On Wednesday 26th June, the Lincoln Beekeepers Association had the pleasure of hosting a group of 5th-year Veterinary Students from Nottingham University at the Gelder Group Head Office. Led by Amelia Garcia, the students were introduced to the fascinating world of beekeeping as part of their course curriculum, which includes the study of honey bees, their management, and the various issues surrounding them.

The day commenced with an informative session covering the history of beekeeping, the role of the British Beekeeping Association, and the evolutionary journey of the bee. The students then delved into more technical aspects, learning about bee anatomy and development, as well as the critical importance of bees to our environment and human survival.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the practical experience of seeing the bee hives that Gelder Group have on site. Donning bee suits, gloves, and wellies, the students ventured into the apiary to open a few hives. Identifying the bees and finding the queen was a special moment, leaving a lasting impression on the students.

A great day was had by all, and the group expressed their appreciation for the invaluable experience Gelder Group where able to offer and their efforts are crucial in keeping the craft of beekeeping accessible to new generations of beekeepers.
